Why Being Practical About AI Is My Next Adventure
At 5,895 meters above sea level, standing on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at thirteen, I learned something that still shapes how I approach every challenge: mountains don’t care about your dreams. They care about preparation, respect for the terrain, and your ability to read the signals your body sends you.
Pain and pleasure. Risk and reward. The algedonic loop.
Mountaineering hurts. My legs burn, my breath is thin, altitude hits hard, and exhaustion never really fades. Add biting cold, strict nutrition, dehydration, and the isolation of unfamiliar faces.
But I still climb mountains, because somewhere between the summit and the struggle, something magical happens.
The noise of classes, people, and shouts fades away. In that space, it’s only me - One step, breathe, repeat. This exact pain of consistency channels my focus to the mountain only, humbles my ego, and reminds me how alive I actually am.
Then comes the moment of pleasure. It’s me versus me on the mountain. The peace and calm I feel remind me that I’m chasing my highest potential. That’s when I realize how close goals really are, and how easily people give up without knowing how far they’ve already come.
I didn’t have that vocabulary then, but I lived it. Every step up Kilimanjaro was a negotiation between the pleasure of progress and the pain of altitude. My body screamed warnings - headaches, nausea, the crushing fatigue of thin air. But there was also the euphoria of each camp reached, each sunrise above the clouds, each meter gained toward that snow-capped peak.
Mountaineering taught me that the mountains always give you feedback. Ignore the pain signals, push through when you should retreat, and the mountain will humble you. But listen carefully, respect the balance, and you can achieve what seems impossible.
The AI Summit: A Different Kind of Climb
Now, as I watch the enterprise world grapple with autonomous AI agents, I see the same dynamic playing out—except most organizations are climbing blind.
